Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Interactive Media Technologies is a four-year undergraduate programme offered by the School of Science and Technology at the Open University of Kenya (OUK). OUK, established in 2023, is a pivotal institution in Kenya's mission to democratise higher education, prioritising accessibility, flexibility and affordability through online and digital learning, eliminating traditional barriers such as cost, academic requirements and location. The programme integrates a fusion of creative artistry with robust computer science and development principles, designed to equip students with the skills necessary to craft design interfaces and products that not only satisfy human needs but also adhere to industry standards. At its foundation, the programme delves into the entire spectrum of the design process, emphasising the utilisation of industry-standard tools and methodologies for investigation, ideation and implementation. Central to the programme's ethos is the cultivation of expertise across three fundamental pillars: Design and Visual Elements, Content Development, and Programming, complemented by three supplementary subjects - Graphic Art, Visual Narrative, and Independent Studio Projects - that collectively enrich students' learning experiences and prepare them for dynamic roles in the interactive media landscape. The programme addresses the urgent need for skilled professionals in the rapidly evolving field of educational technology and instructional design, seeking to bridge the gap between demand and talent by equipping students with specialised knowledge and practical skills in instructional design, e-learning development, multimedia production and learning analytics. It promotes the creation of equitable learning experiences for diverse learners, including those with disabilities, and empowers graduates to drive innovation in education by leveraging emerging technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality and artificial intelligence. The goal of the programme is to cultivate a new generation of skilled professionals equipped to drive innovation and excellence in education through the effective integration of technology and instructional design principles, preparing graduates who are capable of leading change, promoting equity, and positively impacting education at local, national and global levels.
