Master of Technology Education

The Master of Technology Education programme is offered by the School of Education at the Open University of Kenya (OUK). The guiding philosophy of the programme is pragmatism. Learners are given an opportunity to use their head, heart and hands in an inclusive and flexible learning environment that can facilitate innovation and application of technological knowledge and skills to solve societal problems. The development of this Master Curriculum was precipitated by a planning process that included a Needs Assessment and a Stakeholders' conference that identified the need to develop a new programme to address the demand for a highly skilled workforce to drive the country's TVET agenda. With the government of Kenya's policy on 100% transition from primary to secondary school and the shift in government policy in favour of TVET, the number of TVET institutions and the student population has risen significantly, calling for measures to increase training of TVET trainers/tutors at postgraduate level. The programme aims to produce graduates with the ability to create, disseminate, and apply new knowledge and skills to solve societal problems. Graduates can serve as trainers in TVET institutions and consultants in the education sector nationally and globally. It provides a pathway for progressive education, enabling Bachelors of Technology Education graduates to deepen their knowledge and expertise and stay abreast of the latest technological advancements and educational methodologies. The programme also enhances career prospects, opening up opportunities for leadership roles in educational institutions, corporate training environments, and governmental agencies focused on educational policy and curriculum development. The programme is designed to prepare researchers and innovators in technology education, leading to improved educational outcomes and the ability to address contemporary challenges in the community, particularly in the areas of Building and Civil Technology, Electrical and Electronics Technology, Mechanical Technology, Automotive Technology, Computer Technology and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system management and leadership. The mode of delivery of the programme will primarily be online, offered through modules, with pedagogical strategies including seminars, presentations and online learning. The programme shall be offered in four semesters (2 years); the total course credits for the programme are 55 and the total course instructional hours required for graduation is 750 hours, comprising 40 units of coursework, 2 units of proposal writing and 15 units for thesis writing.
