Academic overview
Overview
The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science equips learners with the knowledge, practical skills and professional competencies required to design, develop and implement innovative computing solutions to real-world problems.
The curriculum is informed by emerging trends in computing and the evolving needs of industry and society. It combines theoretical foundations with practical, hands-on learning in areas such as software development, algorithms, computing technologies, problem-solving and emerging areas of computer science.
Delivered fully online, the programme provides a flexible learning experience through asynchronous e-learning, facilitated problem-solving activities and online collaboration. Learners engage in practical projects, laboratory activities and field-based experiences throughout the programme, including an eight-week field attachment at the end of the third year and a capstone project in the final year.
What You Will Gain
By completing this programme, learners will:
Develop strong foundations in computer science, computing technologies and computational thinking.
Gain practical skills in designing, developing, testing and implementing software and computing solutions.
Apply algorithms, programming techniques and appropriate design approaches to solve complex problems efficiently.
Develop the ability to analyse real-world problems and translate them into effective technology-based solutions.
Gain experience working with current and emerging technologies and methodologies in computer science.
Gain practical experience through laboratory activities, projects, field attachment and a final-year capstone project.
Develop the professional competencies needed to innovate and contribute to the technology sector and wider society.

Programme structure
Programme Duration and Structure
This is a four-year programme delivered over eight semesters.
Year 1: Students build a strong foundation in computer science, supported by general University courses that promote academic, professional and ethical development.
Years 2 and 3: Students progress to more advanced computer science concepts, strengthening their theoretical knowledge and practical skills through coursework, laboratory activities and projects.
Year 3: Students undertake Field Attachment (CSC331) for a minimum of eight weeks at the end of the academic year, providing an opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a real-world professional environment.
Year 4: Students undertake advanced and specialised areas of computer science aligned with their career interests and complete a capstone project that demonstrates their ability to apply computer science knowledge to real-world challenges.
Practical learning is integrated throughout the programme through laboratory work, projects, field experience and the final-year capstone project, preparing learners for professional practice and lifelong learning in the technology sector.
Assessment methods
Assessment and Grading
The programme uses a combination of continuous, practical and final assessments to evaluate learners’ knowledge, skills and ability to apply computer science concepts to real-world problems.
Assessment methods include:
Content-embedded quizzes to assess understanding of course concepts.
Online practical work and laboratory activities to evaluate hands-on computing and problem-solving skills.
Open-book tests to assess the application and interpretation of knowledge.
Project reports and e-portfolios to demonstrate research, practical and project-based learning.
End-of-course online examinations to assess overall mastery of the course content.
Students undertaking projects will maintain e-portfolios documenting their work and will make oral presentations of their research projects to an evaluation panel. All submitted academic work is subject to plagiarism checks before final grading.
Assessment Structure
For each taught course unit, the final assessment comprises:
Coursework – 50%: Assignments, laboratory practicals and continuous assessment tests.
Written examination – 50%: A compulsory examination conducted at the end of the course.
Each course unit is marked independently out of 100 marks. The written examination has a minimum duration of two hours and a maximum duration of three hours. The pass mark for each course unit is 50%.
Grading System
Marks | Grade | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
75%–100% | A | Excellent |
65%–<75% | B | Very Good |
55%–<65% | C | Good |
50%–<55% | D | Pass |
Below 50% | E | Fail |
