The Master of Data Science is designed to address the critical need for skilled data scientists in a developing country context. Entry requirements

A candidate must satisfy the general University admission criteria for Masters Programmes: • A Bachelors degree in a relevant area of study or an equivalent qualification recognised by Senate. • A Bachelors degree with at least a Pass or an equivalent qualification recognized by Senate and a relevant Postgraduate Diploma from the Open University of Kenya or an institution recognized by Senate. Programme structure

The programme spans over two academic years, divided into four academic semesters, and shall be offered in 4 semesters. The total course credits for the programme are 64 and the total course contact hours required for graduation is 960 instructional hours. A practicum component is integrated in Semester 4 to provide applied data science experience in a real-world setting.

Semester 1 covers statistical learning, data wrangling, database systems and research methods. Semester 2 advances into machine learning, big data technologies, data visualisation and cloud computing for data science. Semester 3 focuses on deep learning, natural language processing, specialised electives and project management for data teams. Semester 4 combines advanced topics in AI ethics and responsible data science with the research project or practicum.

All courses are delivered through the OUK virtual learning environment, combining asynchronous learning materials with scheduled synchronous seminars and practical lab sessions.

Assessment is conducted through a blend of continuous academic tasks and formal summative examinations.
