The Open University of Kenya (OUK), in collaboration with Huawei, has launched a Huawei ICT Academy on campus. This initiative aims to equip students with cutting-edge ICT skills—including Artificial Intelligence—culminating in dual professional certification from OUK and Huawei.

The Huawei Certified ICT Associate – Artificial Intelligence (HCIA-AI) course offers a comprehensive learning pathway, covering foundational AI concepts, hands-on practical labs, exposure to Huawei’s robust ecosystem, and globally recognized certification—all delivered by OUK-certified trainers. Learners will gain proficiency in machine learning and deep learning algorithms for designing and developing AI products and solutions.

This course responds to the growing demand for AI professionals across industries in Kenya and globally. With AI technologies now driving innovation in sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, finance, education, and transportation, there is a pressing need for skilled individuals who can understand, develop, and apply AI solutions.

Delivered through OUK’s flexible, fully online platform and supported by Huawei’s cutting-edge curriculum and AI technologies, the HCIA-AI course offers students the opportunity to earn professional certification while studying remotely and guided by certified trainers.

By the end of the course, you will have developed core competencies in machine learning, deep learning, neural networks, and AI programming—enhanced by hands-on experience with Huawei’s AI platforms.

The Huawei Certified ICT Associate – Artificial Intelligence (HCIA–AI) course provides a comprehensive introduction to Artificial Intelligence, covering its evolution, core concepts, and practical applications. Learners will explore traditional machine learning and modern deep learning algorithms and gain hands-on experience using industry-standard tools such as TensorFlow and Huawei’s MindSpore framework.

This course aims to equip learners with foundational and practical skills in Artificial Intelligence, focusing on machine learning, deep learning, and neural networks. Through hands-on training using TensorFlow, MindSpore, and Huawei’s AI ecosystem, participants will gain the competencies needed to design, develop, and deploy AI solutions across various sectors.

  1. AI Fundamentals – Introduction to AI, machine learning, deep learning, and industry applications.
  2. Huawei AI Solutions – Overview of Huawei’s AI ecosystem, including Ascend AI chips, MindSpore framework, and ModelArts platform.
  3. Machine Learning & Deep Learning – Key algorithms, neural networks, and model training techniques.
  4. AI Development Tools – Hands-on labs using Huawei’s AI tools and cloud services.
  5. Ethics & Future Trends – Responsible AI practices and emerging AI trends.
  1. Register as an OUK student.
  2. Meet all the OUK student requirements and pay the required fees.
  3. Register a Huawei account through SOMAS.
  4. Attend all the facilitated live sessions.
  5. Attempt the practice exams.
  6. ⁠Attempt and pass the final exam.

Learning Approach

The HCIA–AI course is delivered through a fully online platform. To enhance understanding and support practical application, the program includes facilitated live sessions led by certified OUK trainers. These interactive sessions are designed to guide learners through key concepts, hands-on exercises, and the certification process.

Live classes provide opportunities for real-time engagement, Q&A, and collaborative learning—ensuring that each participant receives the support needed to master both theoretical and practical aspects of Artificial Intelligence.

Upon successful completion of the course and having met all the University requirements and pass the exams, the student will be issued with a dual certification from OUK and Huawei.

Certification Exam

The HCIA–AI certification exam is designed to assess your understanding of AI concepts, tools, and Huawei’s AI platforms through a balanced mix of theoretical and practical questions. The exam includes multiple-choice, true/false, and scenario-based questions. You will also be tested on your ability to apply knowledge in a practical setting through a comprehensive AI experiment section.
