The education initiative aims to enroll and train 10,000 students, equipping them with industry-relevant ICT skills and Huawei professional certifications in Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity and Coding. The Academy will focus on innovation-driven learning, offering dual certification — both academic and Huawei-recognized — and will support the establishment of a Virtual Innovation Hub to foster student-led solutions to real-world challenges.

In addition, the partnership with Equity Group Foundation under the health initiative also aims to contribute to the development of various digital health initiatives including Telemedicine services under the Equity Group Foundation social impact model.

Mr. Gavin Gao, CEO of Huawei Kenya, officially handed over the Huawei ICT Academy plaque to Prof. Elijah Omwenga, Vice Chancellor of the Open University of Kenya, during a ceremony held at Equity Centre. The event was attended by Dr. James Mwangi, Chancellor of the Open University and Executive Chairman Equity Group Foundation, who applauded the partnership as a powerful model for digital transformation.

“This partnership exemplifies our shared commitment to nurturing digital talent in Kenya,” said Mr. Gao.

“Together with Equity Group Foundation and Open University of Kenya, we’re not just investing in infrastructure — we’re investing in people.”

Dr. Mwangi noted that Equity Group Foundation’s involvement underscores its longstanding commitment to inclusive growth through education. “Through this collaboration with Huawei and the Open University of Kenya, we are scaling access to global tech skills, particularly for young people who might otherwise be left out of the digital revolution. We’re building the workforce of tomorrow — one that is inclusive, innovative and equipped to transform Kenya and Africa.”

“The Huawei ICT Academy at Open University of Kenya will offer courses in key areas such as networking, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. With content aligned to global standards and delivered online, students from all over Kenya — and beyond — will benefit from flexible, world-class ICT training. We aim to reach over 10,000 learners with skills that will enable them to innovate, compete and lead in the digital economy," he added

Prof. Omwenga hailed the partnership as a model for modern higher education. “This initiative positions the Open University of Kenya as a hub for digital innovation. By integrating Huawei’s global expertise and Equity Group Foundation’s support, we are unlocking new possibilities for learners to thrive in a tech-driven world.”

Through the collective strengths of industry, academia, and social development partners, the collaboration promises to unlock new pathways to prosperity for thousands of Kenyan youths.
