OUK–COL Partnership Deepens Policy Implementation and Operational Excellence

OUK, COL Hold Strategic Workshop to Strengthen Policy Implementation and Institutional Capacity

The Open University of Kenya (OUK), in partnership with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), held a Strategies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) Development Workshop from 8th to 10th December 2025, aimed at strengthening institutional capacity for effective, inclusive, and sustainable policy implementation.

The three-day workshop was facilitated by Prof. Paul Prinsloo, a consultant with the Commonwealth of Learning, and brought together academic, administrative, and management staff from across the University to deliberate on key strategic and operational priorities.

The workshop was officially opened by the Ag. Registrar (Academic Affairs), Dr. Catherine Kagucia, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor. In her remarks, Dr. Kagucia underscored the central role of well-defined strategies and SOPs in enhancing institutional efficiency, strengthening governance structures, supporting long-term growth, and ensuring the effective implementation of existing policies.

Participants engaged in in-depth discussions on the evolving policy environment at OUK, focusing on critical factors such as staff capacity, financial sustainability, digital infrastructure, and the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in higher education. These discussions were anchored in the University’s ambition to scale high-quality online learning, expand access to 100,000 learners, and embed inclusivity across all institutional processes.

OUK leadership also highlighted key achievements and priority areas, including authentic assessment, research development, and alignment with Competency-Based Education (CBE) frameworks. These insights informed the development of practical strategies and SOPs designed to translate policy into action.

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants developed implementation strategies for five core institutional policies: Artificial Intelligence (AI) Usage, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), Student Support, and Learning and Assessment. The outcome marked a significant milestone in strengthening OUK’s operational and governance framework.

The Open University of Kenya expressed its appreciation to the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) for its continued support and partnership, and to Prof. Paul Prinsloo for his expert guidance throughout the process, which contributed significantly to the success of the workshop.
