OUK Hosts NC4 Delegation on Cybersecurity Capacity Building Tour

The Vice Chancellor of the Open University of Kenya (OUK), Prof. Elijah Omwenga, on Wednesday received a high-level delegation attending a Cybersecurity Capacity Building Programme for Prosecutors, Law Enforcement, and Data Protection Officers. The programme, which is underway at Machakos University, is organized by the National Computer and Cybercrimes Coordination Committee (NC4).

The delegation, led by Dr. James Kimuyu, Director of NC4, visited OUK’s offices at Konza Technopolis as part of their itinerary, which also included a tour of the national Data Centre.

During the engagement, Prof. Omwenga briefed the visitors on OUK’s programmes, noting that the university is strategically positioned to collaborate with NC4 in advancing national and regional cybersecurity capacity. He highlighted OUK’s flagship offerings in the field, including the Bachelor of Data Science and the Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security and Digital Forensics.

“Cybersecurity is one of the fastest-growing fields in higher education and national security. With our fully online, flexible and affordable model, OUK is well-placed to build the next generation of digital security experts,” said the Vice Chancellor.

According to OUK Registrar, Academic Affairs, Dr. Catherine Kagucia, the university has already recorded strong enrollment in the discipline, with 705 undergraduates in the Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security and Digital Forensics and 51 students at the Master’s level.

Also, present was the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Planning and Infrastructure, Prof. Christopher Chepken, who emphasized the importance of fast-tracking a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between OUK and NC4. 

“Through this partnership, we can roll out joint training and research programmes that directly respond to the country’s cybersecurity needs,” he noted.

On his part, Dr. Kimuyu commended OUK for its forward-looking approach in offering specialized programmes in cybersecurity and digital forensics. He explained that the officers are undergoing a one-week intensive capacity building training, which will culminate in their graduation and certification on Friday, September 5, 2025, at Machakos University.

The visiting officers expressed strong interest in enrolling in OUK’s programmes, citing the flexibility, affordability, and accessibility of the government’s only online university.
