OUK VC Prof. Elijah Omwenga Recognised for Financial Accountability Excellence
The Open University of Kenya (OUK) has recorded a major institutional milestone after Vice-Chancellor Prof. Elijah Omwenga, FICTAK, was recognised by the Office of the Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service for steering the university to an unmodified audit opinion for the 2023/2024 financial year.
The recognition, based on the Auditor-General’s report, underscores OUK’s commitment to sound financial management, integrity and strong accountability systems—hallmarks of good governance in the public sector.
An unmodified audit opinion, commonly referred to as a “clean audit,” signifies that an institution’s financial statements present a true and fair view of its financial position and comply fully with applicable laws, regulations and public finance management standards. For a young and fast-growing institution like OUK, the achievement reflects deliberate leadership, disciplined systems, and a culture of compliance.
Prof. Elijah Omwenga holds the award from the Office of the Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service, recognising OUK’s achievement of an unmodified audit opinion.
In acknowledging the award, Prof. Omwenga attributed the success to collective effort, noting that the milestone was made possible through teamwork, professionalism and adherence to transparent financial practices across all departments of the university.
“This recognition affirms our resolve to uphold the highest standards of accountability and prudent use of public resources as we build a future-ready, technology-driven university,” he said.
The achievement further enhances confidence among key stakeholders, including government, development partners, students and the public, while positioning the Open University of Kenya as a model public institution committed to integrity and excellence in governance.
As OUK continues to expand access to quality higher education through open, distance, and digital learning, the clean audit opinion provides a strong foundation for sustainable growth, institutional credibility and long-term impact in Kenya’s higher education sector.
