OUK and DAAD Forge Partnership to Launch German Language Programme

KONZA TECHNOPOLIS, 2025 – The Open University of Kenya (OUK) is set to introduce a German language programme following a high-level meeting with representatives from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) on January 24, 2024. The collaboration marks a significant step in fostering international partnerships and promoting foreign language education in Kenya.

Strengthening Global Academic Ties

The meeting, held at OUK’s headquarters, brought together senior officials from both institutions including:

  • Prof. Elijah Omwenga, Vice Chancellor, Open University of Kenya
  • Prof. Carolyne Omulando, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs)
  • Dr. Dorothee Weyler, DAAD Regional Director for Africa
  • Dr. Eliza Paragiotatou, DAAD German Lecturer at the University of Nairobi

The discussions centered on the structured introduction of German language instruction at OUK, beginning with a pilot programme aimed at enhancing students' linguistic and cultural competencies.

A Structured Approach to Language Learning

As part of the partnership, OUK will roll out a basic-level German language course as an initial pilot, enrolling thirty-five (35) students. The programme will adhere to internationally recognized language instruction standards and serve as a foundation for more advanced levels in the future.

"We are excited about this partnership as it opens doors for OUK students to access high-quality German language education and potential academic collaborations with institutions in Germany", said DAAD Representative, Dr. Dorothee Weyler (DAAD Regional Director Africa.

OUK Vice Chancellor, Prof. Elijah Omwenga, noted the importance of the partnership, stating that it positions the University in a global outlook as intended by the government of Kenya.

"This initiative aligns with OUK’s commitment to providing globally competitive education, and the German language programme will equip our students with valuable linguistic and cultural skills", he said.

To ensure a robust curriculum, OUK will engage Dr. Paragiotatou as a consultant. Additionally, the University plans to recruit a qualified German language education expert to collaborate on designing a comprehensive curriculum tailored to beginner learners. The programme will incorporate innovative teaching methodologies, including blended and online learning components.

Capacity Building and Teacher Training

A key aspect of the initiative is the development of qualified instructors. Under Dr. Paragiotatou’s guidance, OUK will identify suitable candidates to undergo rigorous training, equipping them with essential pedagogical skills, cultural competence and digital tools necessary for effective language instruction.

Implementation Timeline and Future Outlook

The preparatory phase, including curriculum development and teacher training, will commence on February 1, 2025, with completion expected within four months. The first cohort of students will begin classes on June 2, 2025.

Following the pilot phase, an evaluation will assess the programme’s success and inform potential expansions. Dr. Weyler also expressed DAAD’s interest in linking OUK with German universities for broader collaboration opportunities.

A Step Towards Internationalization

Speaking after the meeting, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Omwenga underscored the significance of the initiative: “This partnership aligns with OUK’s vision of providing globally competitive education. The introduction of German language instruction will open doors for our students, enhancing their academic and career prospects.”

The partnership is expected to boost cultural exchange and academic mobility between Kenya and Germany, further cementing OUK’s role as a trailblazer in innovative learning solutions in the region.
