KONZA TECHNOPOLIS, 2025 – The Open University of Kenya (OUK) is set to introduce a German language programme following a high-level meeting with representatives from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) on January 24, 2024. The collaboration marks a significant step in fostering international partnerships and promoting foreign language education in Kenya.
Strengthening Global Academic Ties
The meeting, held at OUK’s headquarters, brought together senior officials from both institutions including:

A Structured Approach to Language Learning
As part of the partnership, OUK will roll out a basic-level German language course as an initial pilot, enrolling thirty-five (35) students. The programme will adhere to internationally recognized language instruction standards and serve as a foundation for more advanced levels in the future.
"We are excited about this partnership as it opens doors for OUK students to access high-quality German language education and potential academic collaborations with institutions in Germany", said DAAD Representative, Dr. Dorothee Weyler (DAAD Regional Director Africa.
OUK Vice Chancellor, Prof. Elijah Omwenga, noted the importance of the partnership, stating that it positions the University in a global outlook as intended by the government of Kenya.

The programme will incorporate innovative teaching methodologies, including blended and online learning components.
Capacity Building and Teacher Training
A key aspect of the initiative is the development of qualified instructors. Under Dr. Paragiotatou’s guidance, OUK will identify suitable candidates to undergo rigorous training, equipping them with essential pedagogical skills, cultural competence and digital tools necessary for effective language instruction.
Implementation Timeline and Future Outlook
The preparatory phase, including curriculum development and teacher training, will commence on February 1, 2025, with completion expected within four months. The first cohort of students will begin classes on June 2, 2025.
Following the pilot phase, an evaluation will assess the programme’s success and inform potential expansions. Dr. Weyler also expressed DAAD’s interest in linking OUK with German universities for broader collaboration opportunities.
A Step Towards Internationalization
