OUK Inaugural Tree Planting Event Marks Admission of First Cohort of Students
The Open University of Kenya (OUK) celebrated a historic milestone on Thursday, 30th November 2023, as it welcomed the first cohort of students with a symbolic Tree Planting Event at its Main Campus in Konza Technopolis. This unique initiative not only commemorated the commencement of the 2023/2024 Academic Year but also underscored OUK's commitment to education, environmental stewardship, and community engagement.
Dr. Eric Naivasha, Associate Director of Energy, Environment, and Climate Change, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, representing the University Chancellor, Dr. James Mwangi.
The event witnessed the active participation of partners, including the National Research Fund (NRF) and Equity Bank, highlighting the collaborative effort towards creating a sustainable future. The tree planting exercise, which saw the planting of 800 trees, symbolized the growth not only of the University's green footprint but also of the knowledge and aspirations of the inaugural student cohort.
"The planting of these trees mirrors the growth and potential of the first group of students entering the halls of The Open University of Kenya. It signifies the beginning of a journey where knowledge takes root, blossoms, and becomes a force for positive change," remarked Dr. Naivasha during his address.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Elijah Omwenga, emphasized the significance of integrating environmental awareness into the fabric of education. "As we mark the admission of our first student cohort, we have committed to plant 5 trees for each student that is admitted to our programmes," he noted.
The tree planting event served as a bridge between academia and sustainable practices, embodying OUK's mission to produce well-rounded graduates who are not only academically proficient but also environmentally aware and socially responsible.
As the trees take root, they symbolize the beginning of a journey for both the students and the University—The Innovative University for Inclusive Prosperity.
