Dr.James Onyango

Dr. James Onyango is a Senior Lecturer and Chair of the Department of Economics at the Open University of Kenya. He holds a PhD and an MA in Economics from Moi University and a Bachelor of Education in Mathematics and Economics from Egerton University. With over 15 years' experience in higher education, his teaching expertise covers microeconomics, macroeconomics, managerial economics, econometrics, public-sector economics, fiscal policy, research methods, monitoring and evaluation, and economic development. He specialises in public finance, fiscal policy, impact evaluation, curriculum development and digital pedagogy. His research focuses on macroeconomic policy, environmental and climate economics, financial inclusion, industrialisation, socioeconomic welfare, governance and online learning. Dr. Onyango has contributed to the design and development of undergraduate and postgraduate curricula, digital learning modules and the supervision of doctoral, master's and undergraduate research. His consultancy experience encompasses socioeconomic studies, infrastructure and programme evaluation, technical and performance audits, public debt management, macroeconometric modelling, enterprise development, impact evaluations and institutional capacity building across public institutions, development agencies and professional networks in Kenya. His community and professional service includes mentoring students and emerging professionals, facilitating capacity-building programmes, participating in policy dialogue and serving on local and institutional committees.
