The Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) programme at the Open University of Kenya (OUK) embodies a philosophy deeply rooted in accessibility, flexibility, and quality, aiming to democratize education and empower educators for success in the 21st century. OUK's commitment to accessibility and inclusivity is reflected in its open admissions policy, flexible scheduling, and provision of online learning resources, which aim to remove barriers to education and provide opportunities for all aspiring educators. Flexibility and personalization are key tenets of the PGDE programme, offering various learning modalities such as online courses, blended learning experiences, and face-to-face interactions, allowing educators to tailor their learning journey to their individual needs and goals, and fostering a culture of self-directed learning and professional growth. Riding on the philosophy of accessibility, flexibility and inclusivity, the PGDE aims at utilizing innovation and technology and cutting-edge educational technologies and interactive multimedia resources to engage and inspire educators. By doing so the programme provides skilled and competent teachers, educational managers and researchers that participate in the human resource development value chain, based on the belief that the modern educationist is one who is able to utilize modern technology in transforming learners' mindset in order to adapt to the demands of modern education. The PGDE programme emphasizes critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, digital literacy, cultural competence, and social responsibility, preparing educators to instil these skills in their students and fostering a generation of global citizens who can navigate diverse perspectives, solve complex problems, and contribute positively to society. The needs assessment for the programme blended qualitative and quantitative methods, and findings highlighted a rising demand for specialized education, with professionals seeking flexibility and practical skills. The PGDE offers a flexible and comprehensive path for aspiring educators, catering to diverse needs and allowing students to balance education with other commitments, with practical experience being key through opportunities for teaching practice and internships. The curriculum covers various topics including educational psychology and technology integration, and the programme supports graduates with ongoing professional development and fosters a vibrant learning community. Furthermore, based on the new reforms where Competency Based Education forms the basis of basic, tertiary and higher education, the PGDE in education has been designed to fit in, aiming at producing educators and educational managers who will provide value to the existing educational reforms and support the implementation of Competency Based Curriculum in Basic and higher education institutions in Kenya. The goal of the programme is to equip educators with advanced skills and knowledge to enhance their effectiveness in diverse educational settings. Delivered online, the programme emphasizes rigorous adherence to high teaching standards, fostering professional growth and pedagogical innovation, with community service learning as a key component encouraging educators to apply their skills to address real-world challenges and promote positive social change within their communities. Mahitaji ya kujiunga

A candidate who has obtained a Bachelor's Degree with at least a 2nd Class Honors, Upper Division of Open University of Kenya; or
A candidate who has obtained a Degree or an equivalent qualification from other institutions recognized by the University Senate as of comparable academic status to Open University of Kenya; or
A candidate who has obtained a Bachelor's Degree (2nd Class Honors, Lower Division).
These minimum requirements shall be reviewed from time to time to reflect new developments in the education sector in the Country.
Any other qualifications that may be determined by senate recognising prior learning leading to equivalents of the identified criteria, experience and skills of learners.
Eligible candidates are required to fill in an online application form available from the University's website, attach relevant documents as proof of eligibility, and pay an application fee determined by the University Senate from time to time.

Muundo wa programu

The duration of the PGDE programme shall normally extend over three trimesters or one academic year. One trimester will last for approximately 14 weeks. A candidate must have covered 42 units that include six (6) units for the Practicum (Teaching Practice or Institutional practice) to graduate, covering a minimum of 12 units, 42 credits, and a total of 675 hours. This includes Core Courses of the Programme, Specialization Area Courses, and Electives. All the Core Common Professional courses and Specific specialization methods courses are mandatory as well as the electives (as indicated in programme structure), and Mandatory Teaching Practice will be undertaken after completing coursework.

Assessment at the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) at OUK level shall be a multifaceted process designed to comprehensively evaluate the knowledge, skills, and competencies of aspiring teachers. It encompasses formative and summative assessments, portfolios, peer assessment, teaching practice and written assignments as spelled out by Open University Kenya policy. Formative assessments include Discussion Forums and Peer Feedback, Quizzes and Polls, Reflective Journals and Blogs, Assignment Drafts, Surveys and Feedback Forms, Group Projects and Collaborative Tools. Summative assessments include Proctored Online Exams, Timed Quizzes and Tests, Research Papers, teaching practice, portfolios and any other applicable online assessment tool. Evaluation of coursework is made up of:

Coursework assessment-based forums and Peer Feedback, Quizzes and Polls, Reflective Journals and Blogs, Assignment Drafts, Surveys and Feedback Forms, Group Projects and Collaborative Tools, accounting for 50% of the total mark in each course; and
Proctored Online examination constituting a 2-3 hour paper per course, accounting for 50% of the total mark in each course. Grading: 70-100
